These are my own reactions as I watched the Coliseum Square Baptist Church demolished. The first Baptist church in the South, and the first one to give services for the slaves.

I am pleased to announce the reason I have been absent from this project for the past few weeks, a revamp and reboot of my main site Humid City. The site has been expanded and retooled by our new collaborators over at ThinkNOLA and now includes an interactive calendar, a streamlined and more robust interface, and a lot more data!

I have also created a two new "Annex sites,":
Humid City on MySpace which will focus on NOLA based art and music and Humid City on LJ which will be more of a discussion forum. Please stop by and say hello!

I would also like to give a quick shout out to our readers in Italy! Thanks for taking an interest (It's you guys from the radio station in Rome, isnt it?)

"Fresh Air from WHYY, May 10, 2006 - Forced out of New Orleans after Katrina hit last year, historian Douglas Brinkley, a professor at Tulane University, soon returned. He helped with rescue efforts and immediately began the task of collecting oral histories of the catastrophe.

The result is his new book, The Great Deluge, which offers a multi-perspective account of the storm and its aftermath. Brinkley is the author of three other historical narratives, including Tour of Duty."

Okay, as Jazz Fest ends and people free up their schedules we will begin casting our nets for more narratives. Due to ThinkNOLA's donation of a 1 gig expansion card for my palm pilot I now have vieo capability. I will be test driving YouTube as a way of adding faces to the voices for our future work. Hopefully I will be able to arrange the first one tomorrow.

The New Orleans Oral History Project is pleased to announce that we are now partnering with The Hurricane Digital Memory Bank. All podcasts and recordings for the Project will now be mirrored both on that site and on Humid City.

The Hurricane Digital Memory Bank was organized by The Center for History and New Media (CHNM) at George Mason University and the University of New Orleans in partnership with the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History and the Louisiana State Museum. Supported by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, it builds on prior work by CHNM to collect and preserve history online, especially through the ECHO project and the September 11 Digital Archive.

Humid City is our parent site, originally a New Orleans music scene blog, now mutated by the forces of Katrina into a forum for New Orleans information and commentary. (Read the BBC article about Humid City and other New Orleans blogs during Katrina.) Built on the same template as The Silver Machine and ShopweRx, using modern technology to make New Orleans a better place, the site boasts a number of writers and contributors ranging from Goat Carson to Matthew Nolan.

Due to requests to make these easier to find I am centralising the various podcasts posted to Humid City since the advent of Katrina. I will be attempting to create a comprehensive record of these times in the Crescent City by continually adding audio interviews with people from a wide range of socioeconomic strata as they tell their storm stories and give their perspective on the rebuilding of the city.
